Art quiz is an assessment like no other! I use one class to observe how students respond and create with a specific set of materials. It's a rich tool in understanding how your students organize time, process materials & present information with little planning. The focus is on spontaneity and improvisation. And it's great fun!
Brown Bag Quiz:
Fill 10 -12 brown shopping bags with similar (yet not the exact same) objects/materials.
Materials include items like:
~glue stick/elmer's glue
~colorful papers, white paper
~pop-cycle sticks, wide or thin
~pastels/colored pencils/chalk
~tapes: duct, masking, colored
~cardboard - corrugated, heavy
~magazines
~small objects: buttons, pipe cleaners, etc
Students decide to work in teams (2-4) or alone.
Each group chooses one bag.
Students create/design an art piece from the materials.
After clean-up, each group presents their art piece - answering the following questions:
What is it?
3/D? 2/D?
Collage, drawing, sculpture, print, etc?
Title?
Process?
Challenges?
Successes?
30 minutes to create
5 minutes to clean-up
10 minutes to present
Variations:
Grade 3 - materials out and they choose any combination of 6
Grade 4 - bags for materials
Grade 5 - bags for materials plus I add a theme (i.e. time, nature, mythical creatures)
Reflections/Notes:
When working in teams, students must decide who takes the art piece home. Sometimes
this discussion needs to be facilitated. Be a careful time keeper so every group has the
chance to share at the end. The noise/activity level can be high - prompting may need to
happen to keep the energy positive and on task. Groups are great to learn collaboration
but some students are lost in the group - be aware of the dynamics within your groups. I
sometimes ask that each group member participates in the presentation.

"Make Paper Stand" Quiz
Give every student one sheet of 12 x 18 white paper.
Instruct them: "Make paper stand."
Watch them surprise you as they fold, crunch, tear, roll the paper.
I ask each student to stay seated as I go to them and listen to how they solved the problem -
writing down each new solution to the challenge.
When everyone is done, we share the results and discuss the variety of ways
one question/challenge can be solved.
Color-Mixing Quiz
Each student receives a page with blank color formulas.
[primary + primary = secondary] I usually fill in the secondary
answer and leave the primary answers for them to fill in.
My quiz sheet has a space for both words and paint.
