Artist Trading Cards
miniature pieces of art (2.5" x 3.5")
ATCs (Artist Trading Cards) are miniature pieces of art that are traded world-wide. They were first made in 1997 when Swiss artist, M. Vanci Stirnemann, created 1200 cards by hand for an exhibit. He invited other artists to create their own cards and trade with him on the final day of his show. This began a movement of small scale artworks - created in any medium - for trade.
I encourage students to have their own swap events; sharing with them how I have ATC gatherings with my friends & neighbors. Oftentimes I will mail an ATC to someone as I think about them, knowing they will return a card when they have time. The tiny format is a wonderful way to keep making art without having a big commitment, while the trading part keeps me in touch with fellow artists and exposes me to new art styles.
Here are some examples of ATCs I have either created or traded for:

Plans:
~Review the history of ATCs. (I include history of calling cards, business cards, etc)
Show website, books, etc (see resources)
~Provide students with a variety of materials.
~Demonstrate a variety of techniques: collaging, painting, stamping, drawing.
~Encourage exploration and volume - they're small format! Cut lots of 2.5" x 3.5" cards.
~Allow time at the end of class for trading ... if students don't want to trade, don't push them.
The next time they make ATCs, the trading will occur naturally.
