The Sketch journal challenge is an open art activity that any amount of students can participate in. It is virtually a prompt for a visual arts activity to be completed in the student's sketch journal. The prompts are similar to those found in The Anti-Coloring Books by Susan Striker; though I write most of them myself. Here are a few of my (& my students) favorites:
~Imagine you are traveling in an airplane to any destination imaginable.
Draw what you see from the plane window as you are landing.
~Design your dream house. What will it look like from the street?
What will it look like from the inside? How many rooms will you have?
What will the floor plan be like?
~If you were a color, what color would you be? Imagine your world as that color.
Would there be other colors in your world? Would you be more than one color?
Create a page in your sketch journal with pastels or watercolor paint showing me
your world as a color.
~Find the Magnetic Poetry Tins. Choose one at random & blindly take about 30 words.
Using only these words, arrange a short poem or statement. Write this in your sketch journal.
Spend a few minutes thinking about the words and focusing on any pictures that come into
your mind as you read your poem. Add a drawing or doodle to your poem/statement.
~If you had a super-power what would it be? (Mine would be Invisibility!) Imagine your life
and how it might change if your super-power was real. Write about the changes in your
sketch journal. Draw yourself as a super-hero!
~Take a painting from the Famous Paintings Binders. Choose one you like looking at.
Using any materials form the supply table, re-create the famous painting in your sketch journal.
